Tondaya had built the existing warehouse in the 18th year of Meiji era,
after the introduction of the wholesale system in Nishijin. Tondaya was
registered as a natinal cultural asset, and is now a classic example of
a Meji period large-scale merchant house.

Tondaya is the typical Kyoto machiya that is a long wooden house with narrow
street frontage, stretching way back from the street and containing six
small courtyard garden. The interior is the special place that only family
members and VIP guest were allowed to enter. Tenth owner took great care
in selecting the wood to be used in building Tondaya and traveled to the
mountains to hand -select the tree .The ten meters long corridor, made
of one piece of long pine tree, lead the inner most VIP room where a big
gorgeous mother-of-pearl table is placed. The guest room was also made
for Noh performance, Japanese traditional play.
【Understanding Traditions】
There is great meaning in the daily rituals and spiritual customs we observe
to ensure health and safety within the home. Many of these rituals date
to the time of the imperial courts, and have been passed down as wisdom
from our ancestors. At the core of these beliefs there is a prayer for
people to live together in peace and harmony.
